Rank Structure

The 9th Fleet of the Terran Stellar Navy recognizes the following requirements for promotion.

Junior Officers

Officer Cadet / OCdt

Any person willing to attend 9th Fleet Academy, whether they have done so yet or not. Also, any recruit who is currently active in the Academy.

Ensign / Ens

Requirement: Graduation from Academy

An Officer Cadet who has graduated Artemis Academy and has survived at least one successful skirmish shall be automatically promoted to Ensign. Ensigns must show basic knowledge of all five duty stations (not including Command). Ensigns should choose a bridge specialisation before advancing to Sub-Lieutenant.

Sub-Lieutenant / SLt

Requirements: Achieved rank of Ensign, logged at least 20 hours at duty stations, and must show proficiency with at least one duty station. (Proficiency is determined by observation of Fleet SrCmd, or the Commanding Officer under which the Ensign has served.)

Granted by ship’s Commanding Officer, approved by Fleet Senior Command.

Once a crew member becomes a SLt, they are expected to continue building their skills and expertise in their chosen specialisation, as well as gaining training in an additional specialisation.

Lieutenant / Lt

Requirements: Achieved rank of Sub-Lieutenant, logged at least 50 hours at duty stations (an additional 30 since SLt), and must show proficiency with at least two duty stations. (Proficiency is determined by observation of Fleet SrCmd, or the Commanding Officer under which the SLt has served.)

Granted by ship’s Commanding Officer, approved by Fleet Senior Command.

Lieutenants are expected to maintain a high expertise in two roles and a high proficiency at all the other roles aboard a TSN vessel.

Senior Officers

Lieutenant Commander / LCdr

Requirements: Achieved the rank of Lieutenant. Logged at least 15 hours on each duty station, for a total of 75 hours. Successfully commanded a TSN vessel at least once, under the direction of a senior officer. Granted and approved by Fleet Senior Command.

The first of the senior officer ranks, Lieutenant-Commanders are expected to be highly experienced and professional officers. At this rank, the officer will begin taking on more lead responsibilities such as assisting with training, beginning to move to command roles or supporting ship captains as first officers. They can be assigned temporary command of a TSN vessel.

Commander / Cdr

Requirements: Achieved the rank of LCdr. Successfully commanded 5 flight expeditions under the direction of a senior officer. Granted and approved by Fleet Senior Command.

When an officer reaches the rank of Commander, they have the opportunity to take on permanent command of their own if they so wish. As long as a vessel and sufficient crew are available, they will be offered a command position. A Commander may choose to take on the position of an Executive Officer aboard a ship if they so wish and may be assigned temporary command positions on occasion. Commanders are expected to take a more active role in their Division, and are also required to know how to coordinate with other vessels when operating as part of a TSN fleet.

Captain / Capt

Requirements: Achieved the rank of Cdr. Successfully commanded 10 flight expeditions.

In order to be promoted to the rank of Captain, a Commander must have recruited a crew of at least 3 more Academy graduates and apply to Fleet Senior Command to be granted permanent command of a 9th Fleet starship.
